ERCuNi (NA67) is used for gas metal and gas tungsten arc welding. Can also be used by oxy-fuel welding of 70/30, 80/20, and 90/10 copper nickel alloys. A barrier layer of nickel alloy 610 is recommended prior to overlaying steel with GMAW weld process.

Copper-nickel alloy solid wire 70/30. Assembled to match Cu-Ni 70/30 alloys. The nominal composition of this product is 67% copper and 30% nickel. A buttering layer is required (normally alloy 400 or pure nickel is used for buttering). Applications include offshore construction, desalination plants, evaporators, condensers, etc, in salt and sea water processing systems.

Copper-nickel alloys are stronger and more corrosion-resistant than copper alone, but due to copper’s softness, are less strong than steel. They have excellent ductility (ability to transfer electricity), toughness, and malleability. Cryogenic (extremely frozen) temperatures do not make copper-nickel alloys brittle. Table 3 compares their mechanical abilities at room temperature; when the temperature drops below freezing, the abilities will change slightly.

Welding copper-nickel requires conformity to standards and high cleanliness at all times. For all welding processes, here is a basic checklist.

  • Source your base materials (copper-nickel alloys) only from reputable suppliers.
  • Ensure that your coordination and plant site maintain the highest levels of cleanliness to ensure a clean production process and supply chain.
  • For all welds, including 90-10 and 70-30 copper nickel, 70-30 copper-nickel consumables are recommended
  • Use 65% nickel-copper consumables when welding steel to copper-nickel.
  • Make sure you do not exceed maximum stress limits for the alloys.
  • Avoid sharp-angled bends in pipe systems as stress concentrators
  • During welding, do not use polluted or contaminated water.
  • If an extra safeguard is required, add ferrous sulfate.
  • If high biofouling resistance is required, electrically insulate copper-nickel alloys from less noble alloys.
